Wolves overcome challenge in Cody

Down 12-0 after Cody scored their second touchdown of the game during the first play of the second quarter, the Wolves came back strong to outscore the Broncs 25-6 the rest of the way to move into a three way tie for first place in the 3A West.

For much of the game, the Wolves were their own worst enemy incurring 13 penalties, but their defense which started slow and gained momentum in the second quarter. They played well the rest of the game, causing four turnovers, three fumbles which all were recovered by the Wolves and one pass interception at the end of the game.

Cody started the scoring on a 9-yard run in the first quarter, but missed the PAT kick going up 6-0. Green River was unable to score at all in the first quarter as Cody’s defense played tough led by their big nose guard Ian Crocker.

The Broncs scored again on a 9-yard run on the first play of the second quarter and went for two on the PAT, but their pass attempt was incomplete and the Wolves were down early 12-0.

Green River went three and out on their next offensive series, but luckily their defense came alive with big plays by Chance Andersen and Drew Wilson and the Wolves got the ball right back.

A long drive with strong running from Candon Croft, Chance Hofer and Drew Wilson ended with Wilson carrying the ball into the end zone on a short run for his state-leading 13th touchdown of the season. The PAT kick was good and the Wolves were on the board 12-7.

Cody’s next series was just four plays with big defensive stops by Blake Waite and a 10-yard tackle for a loss on a blitz by Wilson.

Green River moved the ball on the next series, but had to eventually punt the ball back to Cody, who ran just two plays before the Wolves forced a fumble, which was recovered by Chance Anderson. The Wolves ran three plays before it was half time with the Cody Broncs leading the Green River Wolves 12-7 despite the Wolves out gaining Cody on offense 123 yards of total offense to Cody’s 78 yards.

In the second half the Wolves defense continued to dominate as Cody ran just two plays once again before the Wolves’ William Harvey forced another fumble recovered by Chase Stoeger.

The Wolves again went to the running game with Croft and Wilson carrying the ball that ended up in a 27-yard Hofer field goal to close the lead to 12-10.

Both teams exchanged the ball before Green River’s hard hitting defense caused the third fumble by the Broncs of the game, which was recovered by Green River’s Jordan Tucker.

The Wolves then had a long drive with strong runs and passes to Cole White, Taylor Thornton, and Croft, ending in Croft taking the ball in for his first touchdown of the season on a short run. Green River attempted a two-yard PAT on a pass from Hofer to Devan Love, which was successful and gave the Wolves their first lead 18-12.

However, Cody wasted no time as they got a 31-yard kick off return and then a 15-yard penalty against the Wolves to gave them great field position to start their drive. They ran the ball four times and completed one pass to tie the game at 18-18, with the Wolves Gabe Bunderman blocking their PAT.

The Wolves got the ball back and marched down the field with strong running by Hofer and Croft and pass receptions by Thornton and White, culminating in Croft’s second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run.

The PAT kick was good and the Wolves had made a strong comeback on hard hitting defense and a good combination of running and passing. The game ended as the Wolves Chase Stoeger got the forth turnover against the Broncs on a pass interception.

The Wolves will play their final game of the regular season against the Worland Warriors at home, needing a win to get a top seed in the state playoffs.
