Notes from Town Square: 'What I love about GR'

When asked if I would be interested in writing an article about what I love about Green River I jumped at the opportunity as there are so many wonderful things to celebrate about our community.

First and foremost, “hello,” it’s the people. This past weekend, for example, we concluded one of our city’s most successful and enjoyable family events, The Crystal Classic Winter Festival. At the awards dinner, the participants from Ohio, Montana, Wisconsin, Utah and Missouri amongst others, all spoke about how congenial, helpful, and friendly our staff and the residents were.

Break down on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere or on the Interstate and it is not long before someone will stop and take the time to help out a neighbor or a stranger. It’s just the way most people in our community are, congenial, helpful, friendly and thoughtful; and it should not be taken for granted, these are great qualities, and I love it. Another great benefit we enjoy in Green River is one of the finest school districts in the State, if not the nation. Green River High School has a graduation rate of approximately 93 percent, and that is simply “outstanding.”

Within an educational environment we typically define the success and opportunities of such a system by core areas such as reading, writing and arithmetic. In our district we have also found great success over the years providing excellent opportunities for our students in art, speech and debate, drama, music and band programs and athletics.

What makes a successful education system, first and foremost is the staff, great administrators, teachers, counselors, nurses, coaches, food service, maintenance, janitors, bus drivers, a whole team of people working together to empower our children with the skills needed to be successful in an increasingly competitive world and our kids are very well prepared by this outstanding group of individuals, and I love it.

A recent Wall Street article as reported by MSN June 22, 2015, that the city of Green River’s “median household income” was $74,036 compared to the overall state’s of $57,406, resulting in Green River being the richest city in Wyoming by about $16,630 per family.

This is a result of principally our mineral industries and in Green River particularly it is the trona mines, along with the railroad, and oil and gas industries which set us apart from the rest of the state.

This higher spendable income allows our citizens, to amongst other things, enjoy our beautiful natural environment through, mountain biking, fishing, boating, hiking, hunting, snow-mobiling, jet skiing, golf and numerous other outdoor recreation opportunities that exist because of our unique location adjacent to Flaming Gorge National Recreation area, the Green River, Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge and all kinds of other unique wildlife, natural features, and high desert plant life and, I love it.

So I could go on for days about the wealth of great opportunities our natural and man-made environments here in Green River offers to our residents, but for now I am simply going to conclude with the thought that I truly love Green River and am blessed to have found such a wonderful city to raise my family and to daily enjoy all the great opportunities this community has to offer.
