Basketball beats Laramie at home

The Green River High School varsity boys basketball team played against Laramie and Cheyenne South this weekend for the second week in a row. Two weeks ago, they played and lost. This week, they lost against Cheyenne South Friday, 46-74, but not without putting up a fight.

Head coach Laurie Ivie said this time around was similar to the week before. Cheyenne South is extremely athletic, she said. Yet, Green River did make improvements playing against them.

“We made a few adjustments on defense, and had less turnovers than we did the week prior, in fact, we cut our turnovers in half,” Ivie said.

Saturday, Green River went up against Laramie for the second time and made their comeback. Green River won their game against Laramie with the score of 35-32.

According to the WyoPreps website, this is the first 4A basketball game Green River High School has won since January of 2013.

“It was a huge win for the boys, considering Laramie beat us the week before by 18 points,” Ivie said.

“Hunter Spartz sparked our team from the very start with his rebounding and hustle,” she said.

Spartz made 10 rebounds before halftime. He ended the game with 13 rebounds and made 11 points, shooting 63 percent from the field.

“Cameron Morris played his best game of season,” Ivie said.

He ended the game with five rebounds and made 10 points throughout the game.

The points that ended the game and ensured Green River’s win were made by freshman player Chase Stoeger. Ivie said he came up big in the fourth quarter.

“He hit a big three to put us up by one point,” she said.

Stoeger stole the ball from Laramie with three seconds left on the clock. He was fouled. Stoeger went to the line and made both free throws, bringing Green River up by three points to win the game, 35-32.

Green River’s next game is 7 p.m. Thursday, another home game, against the Evanston Red Devils. Saturday, the boys travel to Riverton. These will be the first two conference games of the season.
