Students leave school for summer

The lyric's of Alice Cooper's song come to mind this time of year. "School's out for summer, school's out forever." For many, school is not out forever but they will surely make the most of their summertime fun.

Schools in Green River had their last day of classes this past Friday. There was much excitement in the air, that last day of school, especially at the end of the day. A few minutes before three was the calm before the storm, at Green River High School.

"They will be coming out real soon; a herd of cattle," staff member Julie Terry commented on the mass of students soon to bd exiting the high school.

A few minutes after three, the first students walk through the front doors. A swarm of students emerge through the doors a minute later and soon the entry way and parking lot are filled with the student body.

Students jumped for joy. There were cheers and hugs alike. Students and staff converse before they part ways and end their school year officially. Lynzi Johnson, Caitlin Ramirez, Hallie Barenz and Camry Peterson were one such group of students who gathered a while longer. The four of them will be sophomores next school year.

When asked if they survived freshman year, Barenz laughed "Oh, I didn't. I just kind of just keep going."

"Just keep on swimming," Caitlin Ramirez said.

"It was way better (than they thought it would be). We had a lot of freedom compared to middle school," said Hallie Barenz.

The sixth graders at Monroe Intermediate School had their own freedom last Friday, at the annual end of the year picnic.

"Its kind of a sixth grade tradition," said staff member Lori Hastert. "We've done this for years. We grill burgers and play games. This year we even got to go fishing."

The picnic was hosted at the county park in Jamestown, and game and fish came out to help with the fishing.

"This was the first year we'd gone fishing," said Hastert. "They liked it. They had a really good time (the students). It was catch and release; a few of them caught."

"We are happy that we don't have to go to classes today and have more time to hang out with my friends," sixth grader Delaina Becenti, said.

"I'm so super excited," said sixth grader Maddie Mortensen. "I'm kind of sad though, because I won't see my friends (in the summer)."

At Jackson Elementary School, now-second-graders Presleigh Massoglia and Bekalyn Sweet said they are excited for the kids summer movies at the Green River movie theatre.

There were many farewells that Friday. Students, young and old are excited simply to have fun and not have to worry about school for a while because, school's out for summer.
