Three Green River athletes shine at Utah meet

Several members of the Green River High School track team got an early start to their season at the Utah High School Track Coaches Association’s Outdoor Championships in West Jordan, Utah.

“We had a pretty good day. It was just good to get an early meet under our belt,” head coach Steve Boyd said. “We learned a few interesting things from the meet as we usually do early in the season.”

Boyd said they learned they have a talented quarter-miler in freshman Andri Dewey, who placed fifth in the race with a time of 1:01.80. He said this was just 1 second from an automatic state qualifying time.

He said junior Josie Givens have a good opening outdoor meet in the middle distance races and placed sixth in the 800 meters and 11th in the 1600.

“She is near the automatic state qualifying marks in both of these events and should reach them soon,” he said.

Boyd added junior Tyler Vendetti had a good long jump, missing the automatic mark by 1.25 inches. Vendetti was the top individual placer for Green River with a fourth-place finish.

The team was supposed to host their annual track meet yesterday, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather. Boyd said they will take a large group to Big Piney this Friday and another group to Utah State University in Orem, Utah this Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to these weekend meets with the weather forecast looking much more favorable later this week,” he said.
