Green River wrestlers strong at Denver tourney

It was a great weekend for Green River wrestling.

Nine Green River High School wrestlers and about a dozen Green River Grapplers combined as a team to compete at the Rocky Mountain Wrestling Tournament in Denver.

The team finished an amazing fifth out of 100 teams at the tournament.

“It was an exciting weekend watching the younger kids compete alongside the high school wrestlers, both groups supported the other, the future looks bright and there is a lot of talent in this town,” Green River High School head coach Marshall Rhodes said.

“We have some great coaches for all the younger wrestlers in our community and that is very exciting for our sport and for Green River.”

Rhodes said the high school group was once again led by Cole Verner, who has now won 14 straight matches at national tournaments without a loss on top of his 70 in a row during the high school season.

“Verner worked his way through a bracket that had five state champions in it and came out on top,” he said.

Juniors Shandon Welsh and Brendan Hopkins, finished fifth at 145 and 195, respectively.

Rhodes said they competed very well against some great competition.

Gage Byers placed sixth in the 18 and under 126 pound class as a sophomore which Rhodes said is a great accomplishment.

Chance Anderson, a freshman for the Wolves, won the 15-year-old rookie division at 144 pounds.

“Chance has a lot of promise as a wrestler and I am very proud of him, he is a competitor and an athlete,” he said.

Also competing hard for the Wolves but not placing were Cyro Montoya (113), Nathan McCann (123), Austin Waters (152), and Jordan Tucker (285).

“I am happy these wrestlers have decided to extend their season and improve, mat time is very valuable and it gives us a chance to fix things and learn how to better compete,” Rhodes said.
