Lady Wolves focus on offensive side of ball

The Green River High School girl’s basketball team played great defensively last Thursday night against rival Rock Springs, but could not find enough ways to score and dropped a 43-32 road contest to their rivals.

Lady Wolves head coach Rick Carroll said he thought the team did a good job on defense, but they fouled too much, especially in the first half.

Green River finished the game with 24 turnovers, and Carroll said many of them were uncontested and that hurt the team.

“I also through we missed a lot of easy baskets. Those are some shots you just have to make,” he said.

The game started out strong for Green River (0-18, 0-8, 4A West). Three free throws by Kasey Turnbull gave the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead. Rock Springs would tie the game at three and eventually take a 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter belonged to the Tigers who seized momentum and led 24-15 at halftime.

Rock Springs scored the first six points of the second quarter before Green River answered back with six consecutive points to once again cut the deficit to nine, 30-21. That would be as close as the Lady Wolves would get in the final two quarters.

Sophomore Taylor Stoeger led Green River with nine points. Mariah Morin added seven, while Turnbull and Payton Bartlett each had five points. Emily White finished with four points and Mallory Seymour and Averee Cobb each chipped in one.

The Lady Wolves will play their last two regular season games at home. They will play Natrona Friday at 6 p.m. and Kelly Walsh Saturday at 1 p.m. The Friday game will be senior night.

Carroll said going into the games, the team needs to have more trust in individuals on offense.

He said there are some pretty good basketball players, they just need to trust themselves and teammates that they can going out and make some shots.
