Givens shines at Simplot

Competing at the nation’s premier high school indoor track meet, Green River junior Josie Givens showed that she is not only one of the best runners in the state of Wyoming, but that she belongs with some of the best in the Western United States.

Givens placed an impressive tenth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.56.

Green River head coach Steve Boyd said Givens broke her own school record in the event that she set at state last year by seven seconds.

After finishing in 20th in the prelims, Givens was one of 27 runners to qualify for the finals in the 800-meters.

Boyd said they were split into nine heats of three runners and that Givens finished first in her heat and tenth overall.

“She broke out into the open on the corner and never looked back,” he said. “Anytime you can finish anywhere in the top 12 at Simplot, you’ve really accomplished something.”

While the longtime Green River coach said Givens has really risen to the occasion during her three seasons as a member of the cross country and the track team, she still may not have reached her potential as a runner.
