Wolves wrestlers finish third

With just a few weeks before the state tournament in Casper, the Green River High School wrestling team got a chance last weekend to face some of the best teams in Wyoming.

The Wolves finished third out of 46 teams at the annual Ron Thon Tournament in Riverton.

The field included all of the 3A and 4A schools in Wyoming. Gillette finished in first place and Powell placed second, just 3.5 points ahead of Green River.

“We definitely didn’t have our best performance of the year but managed to get third,” head coach Marshall Rhodes said. “We conceded too many points this weekend and lost too many close matches, we didn’t have the toughness or shape to finish.”

Senior Cole Verner led the Wolves with a first-place finish and was named outstanding wrestler at the tournament.

Cyro Montoya finished in second, Shandon Welsh was fourth, and Nathan McCann and Hunter Hanks both placed fifth.

Earlier in the week, the Green River varsity team defeated Evanston 47-20 in a road dual. The junior varsity team also defeated the Red Devils.

Winning in the duals against Evanston were Caleb Nathan, Dan Mondragon, Kaycee Cochrane, Chance Anderson, Derrik Erickson, Montoya, McCann, Verner, Jared Flores, Welsh, Austin Waters, Kole Case, Hanks, and Brendan Hopkins.

Green River will host Rock Springs in a dual tonight with the junior varsity starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity slated to begin around 6 p.m.

The following week, Green River will compete at the 4A West Regional Tournament in Rock Springs.

“We believe we can make a run for a state title but realize there are some things to fix right now, time is short. From here on we have to be tougher than we have all year, ignore the pain, and compete at our highest level,” Rhodes said.
