Wolves fall short of rival Tigers

It appeared for awhile last Thursday night that the Green River High School boy’s basketball team would pick up its first victory in more than two years.

Playing in front of a standing-room-only home crowd against rival Rock Springs, a Chase Erickson free throw gave Green River a 44-43 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

Just when it appeared that Green River had grab the momentum, Rock Springs would end the game on a 13-2 run to take home a 56-44 victory. Following the game a dejected Tanner Trumble, who led Green River with 15 points said he thought the team played well until the end of the game.

“At the end we had to many mistakes and some unfortunate things happened,” he said.

A defining point in the game came with just over three minutes left in the game on a questionable call that awarded possession to Rock Springs, who had scored four straight points to take a 47-44 lead.

It appeared Rock Springs had knocked the ball out-of-bounds from Green River guard Kyle Goglio, but the call did not go in favor of the Wolves. Just seconds after the call, Goglio received a technical foul that would give the Tigers two free throws and possession of the ball.

Trumble said he agreed that the call and ensuing technical may have took everything out of the team.

“It was tough to overcome,” he said.

This week, Green River (0-13, 0-3 4A West) will face its toughest road trip of the season with a road trip to battle Kelly Walsh who at several times this season has been ranked as the number one team in the state. The team will play Natrona County Saturday afternoon.

Trumble said the team thinks they can hang with anyone in the conference they just need take it play by play and play for four full eight-minute quarters.
