Out on top: Seniors win final game

It was an emotional scene last Friday night at Wolves Stadium.

Moments after they capped off their high school careers with a 42-20 victory over Worland, the seniors on the Green River High School football team stayed on the field to share just a few more moments together.

The eight members of the senior class Andy Martinz, Caleb Mortensen, Tanner Trumble, Reece Clingenpeel Paul Wright, Rob Hunter, Hayden Love and Taylor Irving came together one last time at midfield to celebrate the teams first victory of the season.

Wolves head coach Don Maggi said he was so happy that the seniors were able to go out with a win.

“It was kind of emotional watching the kids around here the last week knowing it was going to be their final game,” he said. “We played the seniors as much as we could throughout the game and let them soak it up.”

Just moments after the game, Maggi said he told them to enjoy the victory, but then go find their mom, dad and the people that supported them throughout the year and give them and hug and thank them.

Along with the seven seniors, Maggi also praised senior manager Aspen Hamel for her time with the team.

While the team may not have had a huge senior class, their solidarity shined on Friday night when many of them had the number 52 written on their arms in support of Wright, who was unable to play in his final game.

To end his career with a win is something that Love will always remember.

“I played with my brothers and was able to get the win. It was huge. All these guys will remember this. This is something later in life they will look back to for a long time and tell their kid about it,” he said.

Trumble was also elated that the group of kids he grew up playing with was able to end with one last victory.

“It felt so good, the seniors, the ones who stayed, worked hard and it just felt awesome,” he said.
