Cross country readies for state

The Green River High School cross country team got their first taste of postseason action last Thursday at the 4A West Regional Meet in Casper.

The Wolves are now prepping for Saturday’s state championship in Sheridan.

Head coach Steve Boyd said the team is ready to go to state and does not want to the kids to put a lot of pressure on themselves.

“We’re going to go have fun and run within ourselves,” he said.

The longtime Green River coach said the course is mostly grass and takes place on the VA hospital grounds. He said there is one steady incline after the second mile.

Green River had one all-conference performer at last weeks meet in Casper. Junior Josie Givens continued a banner 2014 campaign with a third place finish and a time of 18:54. Senior Nicole Davis just missed out on her second straight all-conference nod. She end the race in 11th place with a time of 20:02.

Sarah Joyner finished in 17th with a time of 20:50, Cassie Newcomb was 24th with a time of 21:25, Cheyenne McMichael ran a time of 21:53 which was good enough for 29th place and Kaleigh Allison was 36th with a timed run of 22:59.

Boyd said Joyner had one of her best races of the season.

As a team the Lady Wolves finished in fourth place, behind champ Rock Springs, Natrona and Kelly Walsh.

The Green River boy’s team finished in fifth place at the race that took place at Paradise Valley Country Club.

Boyd said he was happy with the Wolves performance and everyone was pretty pleased with their results.

Austin Waters was the lone top 20 finisher for the Wolves. He ended the race in 19th place with a time of 17:17. Braden Reichl finished 22nd with a time of 17:26. Curtis Westenskow was the next Green River runner to finish. He placed 28th with a time of 0f 17:47.

The final three Green River runners were neck and neck to the finish with Shawn McGuire finishing 34th at 18:11, Brayden Kovick was 35th at 18:14, and Jaryn Johnson was 36th at 18:19.

Green River was well represented in the junior varsity races with Greg Vanderpool leading the boys with a 15h place finish and a time of 19:19. Caleb Nathan finished 19th with a time of 19:25, and Miles Moffatt was 20th out of 29 runners with a time of 19:28.
