Two of three: Wolves gearing up for spot in class 3A playoffs

It’s a huge week for the Green River High School football team.

After another four quarters of inspired play last Friday in a 38-17 loss to undefeated juggernaut Jackson High School, the Wolves will look to pick up their first win of the season against winless Star Valley.

Following the game last week, Maggi said he expected to see a group of motivated kids who believe they are closer to getting that first victory.

“We just got to get the kids over the hump,” he said.

Before he talked to his team at the end of game, Maggi said they were already talking to each other and they feel like they are getting better.

“That’s the main thing. They believe it. We’ve got three conference games left. Usually the way it works is if you get two (wins) you punch your way into the playoffs,” he said.

Much like his squad, Maggi said Star Valley is young, and it will be a tough place to go and play, but if they have a good week of practice, they are going to be in a good position going into the game.

Following this week’s road matchup against the Braves, Green River will travel to play Cody Oct. 17 before closing the regular season Oct. 24 against Worland who is currently 2-3 on the season.

JACKSON GAME

While Jackson was finally able to put the game out of reach midway in the fourth quarter, Maggi told his team he was proud of their effort and appreciated they way they got after it and the competitiveness they showed.

Green River was able to hold the state’s leading rushing team under their average, and Maggi said for the most part they did a pretty good job defensively.

He said several penalties were frustrating, especially before the snap.

“After a snap, if something happens, it happens. When it’s pre-snap, it’s a mental mistake and we can’t have that,” he said.

Offensively, Maggi said that junior quarterback Tyler Vendetti showed a lot of heart and is a hard worker.

“He is super competitive. That kid is going to be successful in life well beyond football,” he said.

The fourth-year coach also said the sophomore James Bunderman is gaining confidence and did a good job finishing run and was driving through some tackles.

On the defensive side of the ball he said Blake Waite put himself into position to make some play and Jacob Olsen also helped out. Tanner Trumble, who was questionable going into the week after an injury was able to score a touchdown, kick a field goal and kicked two extra points for Green River. Sophomore Drew Wilson scored the other Green River touchdown.
