The Green River Lady Wolves Softball team traveled east last week to take on the Laramie Plainsmen. The team was also supposed to play Cheyenne South, but the game had to be rescheduled due to weather. Because of this schedule change, the results of these two games will be covered next week.
The Lady Wolves took on the Plainsmen on Saturday in two games, with the first game being a conference game. This game started out well for Green River, with them getting on the board right away with one run in the top of the first inning. They extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning, but Laramie quickly responded and scored three runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game up. The teams each scored another run in the fourth inning, keeping the game tied at 4-4. Laramie pulled ahead in the fifth inning after scoring three more runs, and Green River wasn't able hold on, losing the game 4-7 after six and a half innings.
Green River nearly had as many hits as Laramie, racking up eight hits compared to Laramie's nine. Despite this, they weren't quite able to get as many runners across home plate. The best batters for Green River were Izzy Kelley, Ally White, and Danielle Maag. All three players got hits in two of their three at bats. Cassie Kelley and Jocelyn Shantz also got a hit during the game. Izzy Kelley, White, and Maag also led the team in runs scored, with White scoring two runs and the other two girls scoring one run each. The pitcher for the Lady Wolves in this game was Haidyn Terry. She gave up nine hits and struck out two players.
Green River's second game against Laramie was another close one. Both teams were playing well and the score was nearly even throughout most of the game. Laramie ended up having a slight lead by the end of the fifth inning, with the score being 4-3. This lead wouldn't last however, as the Lady Wolves played a fantastic sixth inning to overtake the Plainsmen. Green River scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Laramie tried their best to get the lead back, but Green River was just barely able to hold them off after Laramie scored two runs. This exciting ending led to a narrow victory of 7-6 for the Lady Wolves.
Cassie Kelley and Maag got the most hits for the team this time, with each of them getting two hits during the game. Terry, Shantz, and Kodi Allred all got a hit as well. Izzy Kelley and White scored two runs for the team, with the remaining runs being scored by Cassie Kelley, Shantz, and Hadlee Mortimer who was courtesy running for Maag. Emma Rieck pitched for this game, and allowed seven hits while racking up five strikeouts.
Next week the Lady Wolves will be heading over to Rock Springs to play in a tournament. The tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday, and the other teams playing include Natrona County, Kelly Walsh, Cody and Jackson.
