The Green River Wolves Soccer team hosted a conference game against the Jackson Broncs on April 22. There were several attempts to get the ball in the net by Braxton Doak, Irie Kuball and Gavin Mares during the intense game. In the first half, Green River kept Jackson at three goals while they were unable to score. During the second half, Jaxon Morris scored one goal while the Broncs scored seven more goals. Even with five saves at the net from Goalkeeper Colter Davis, the Wolves couldn't stop the Bronc's aggression. The Wolves lost the game with a final score of 10-1.
Head Coach Josh Webb said he was very proud of the boys for keeping their composure during the game, but feels they have to work on possessing the ball.
"They had no energy," he explained. "They put their heads down and in the second half of the game we just kind of gave up on the ball."
Last Thursday, the Wolves traveled to Evanston to play a conference game against the Red Devils. During the first half of the game, Evanston took the lead with two goals to Green River's one. The Wolves started hitting the net and jumped ahead of Evanston with four goals made in the second half to Evanston's one goal. Green River won the game with a final score of 5-3.
Leading the Wolves was Mares with two goals and Doak, Izyk Arellano and Reece Wilde with one goal each. Kuball and Hunter Haselhuhn had one assist each during the game while Dominick Littlefield, Justin Eckhardt and Arellano had steals. Goalkeeper Davis took charge at the net with six saves.
Coach Webb said they played better against Evanston but he is still concerned that they are playing too much "boot ball." It's been rough on the team this year, missing so many key players, and the boys have been struggling with possession, transitioning and teamwork.
The Wolves traveled to Riverton on Saturday to play a conference game against the Wolverines. Both teams were playing tough defense and by the end of the game it was a tie, 1-1.
Braxton Doak was the leading scorer with one goal and Goalkeeper Davis had a fantastic game with 11 saves at the net. There were also shot attempts made from Doak, Kuball and Arellano during the game.
Coach Webb knew the boys were tired by the third game of the week but felt they didn't possess the ball like they should have.
"This team likes to possess the ball, and we play better when we possess the ball and we didn't possess the ball at all," he said. "We are going back to the basics during practices and running some possession-based practices."
He wants to get the boys moving off the ball, moving as a team together and keeping their shape instead of dribbling everywhere. If they can do that, he feels like they will have better success.
Green River will travel to Casper and play two more conference games this weekend. The Wolves will take on the Kelly Walsh Trojans on Friday at 6 p.m. and then they will play the Natrona County Mustangs on Saturday at noon.
The Wolves are capable of beating both of the teams they face this week, as long as they play as a team and apply what they learn in practices.
