Body of missing Rock Springs woman found near crashed vehicle

The body of a woman missing for roughly two months is believed to have been found near a crashed car on White Mountain north of Rock Springs.

Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jason Mower explained that the sheriff’s office received a report of a suspected dead body found around 12:30 p.m. Sunday in a ravine near a crashed car on White Mountain.

“We have reason to believe the decedent is Melissa Ann Amadio, 41, of Rock Springs,” Mower said, noting that the sheriff’s office was waiting for final confirmation from a forensic autopsy. He pointed out that the deceased matches the physical description of Amadio and the vehicle matches details from the missing person report. Personal effects recovered at the scene further support the preliminary identification of Amadio, according to Mower.

Amadio was reported missing to the Rock Springs Police Department on Saturday, March 1, and had last been seen on Wednesday, February 26.

The crashed vehicle was found north of Rock Springs, west of Moses Drive and south of Stassinos Ranch.

“The cause of death has not yet been confirmed. However, the injuries appear consistent with a car crash, and there is currently no evidence of foul play,” Mower said. “Evidence at the scene indicates the vehicle veered off a steep embankment near the top of White Mountain, rolled multiple times, and came to rest about three-quarters of the way down, wedged in a steep ravine. The body, believed to have been ejected during the crash, was recovered less than 50 yards from the vehicle. The crash site was not easily visible from the top or base of the mountain.”

Mower noted that the cause of the crash, whether accidental or intentional, cannot be speculated on.

Local law enforcement is not actively seeking public assistance with this case, according to Mower, but anyone with information about Amadio’s activities or whereabouts before her disappearance is encouraged to contact the Rock Springs Police Department.

“As a general reminder for public safety: if traveling alone in rugged or remote areas, always let someone know your plans, carry communication devices, and equip your vehicle appropriately,” Mower said. “Please continue to enjoy our beautiful landscapes with care.”
