Gloria M. Tomich

Gloria M. Tomich, 96, of Rock Springs, Wyoming passed away October 16, 2024 at Deer Trail Assisted Living.

A lifelong resident of Rock Springs, she was born March 5, 1928 at Memorial Hospital of Rock Springs, the daughter of Attilio Canestrini and Alice Julian Canestrini.

She attended school in Reliance, Wyoming and graduated from Reliance High School with the class of 1946. She attended the University of Wyoming and graduated with a degree in secondary education with endorsements in English and journalism.

While at the University, she was affiliated with the Kappa Delta Sorority and was society editor of the Branding Iron, the college newspaper.

She taught one year at Superior High School before marrying James G. Tomich on February 17, 1952 at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. They later moved to Hiawatha, Colorado, where she taught in a one room school. In 1963 she started teaching at Rock Springs High School. She taught for 28 years before retiring in 1991. In 1974 she was selected as Outstanding Secondary Educator in America.

Gloria Tomich was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Community. She served on the Parish Council, took Communion to home bound, and wrote a book on the 100th history of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

She also volunteered at the Young at Heart Senior Center delivering meals on wheels and she volunteered for many years at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County.

Mrs. Tomich was a lifelong member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Retired School Employees and Tyrolian Trentini Club of Wyoming.

Her interests included writing accounts of her life, embroidering, and water aerobics at the Civic Center.

Survivors include two sons, James G. Tomich Jr. and wife Rosanne of Seattle, Washington; Daniel J. Tomich and wife Paula of Colorado Springs, Colorado; brother, Robert Canestrini of Murray, Utah; granddaughters Natasha Tomich and Ileana Tomich; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James G. Tomich Sr .; and daughter Alyce Tomich Loucks.

Cremation will take place; services will be conducted at later date.
