Top GRHS basketball player signs letter of intent to play for Trappers

One of Green River High School's top basketball players is getting ready to take the next step in his athletic career.

Theran Archibald recently signed his letter of intent to play basketball for the Trappers at Northwest College in Powell.

Archibald, who is a senior this year, said he weighed his options when it came to choosing a college. He was able to visit Northwest recently and had the opportunity to talk with the coach and play with the team.

"I really like the coach and the program," Archibald said. "I like how he runs it, how hard he is and how he pushes his players just to be the best team they can be."

When he gets to Northwest, Archibald plans to start by getting general courses out of the way, and he is considering eventually studying engineering.

Looking back on his time with the Wolves, Archibald admits that the team had ups and downs, particularly this past year. Still, he had plenty of high moments, such as the buzzer-beater game against Kelly Walsh last year, which stood out in his mind. Overall, though, it was his relationship with his teammates that meant the most.

"Just hanging out with the team and making those relationships with the guys was a blast," he said.

In addition to having fun, Archibald learned valuable life skills through his time on the court.

"Coach Ivie really instilled in us that hard work translates into real life, so make sure you're always working hard and good things will come from that," Archibald explained.

Good things certainly came from Archibald's hard work during his high school basketball career, and he "will forever hold significant importance to our program," according to GRHS Boys Basketball Head Coach Laurie Ivie.

Archibald currently holds the fourth place record for most career points scored in Green River High School history, according to Ivie. He also ended the season representing the school in seven of eight top ten categories for the 4A West Conference. His name appears in more categories than any other player in the state, as he finished second in scoring, second by a tie in assists, fifth in rebounding, fifth in blocked shots, fifth in free throw percentage, sixth in steals, and seventh in three point percentage.

"Theran excelled on both ends of the court," Coach Ivie said. "He is a tenacious competitor with a scorer's mentality, a phenomenal shooter, and a lockdown defender."

Archibald was also chosen for Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, and First Team All-State. He was unanimously chosen to represent the South in the North/South All-Star game this summer, and he earned the honor to represent Wyoming in the Wyoming/Montana All Star Game, marking the first time a player received such recognition during Coach Ivie's tenure.

"Theran was our team leader and captain, and led all season by example, both on and off the court," Ivie said. "He exemplified the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship, and did so many things on the court that focused on making his teammates better."

While Archibald's legacy for the Wolves will endure, Coach Ivie said she and the team are excited to support him in his next steps.
