The Green River Wolves Swimming and Diving team traveled to Pinedale to compete in the 3A South Conference Championships. The teams included Green River, Evanston, Lander, Rawlins, Lyman, Kemmerer and Sublette County.
Friday was an intense day of competition. Only the top 12 swimmers and divers would be heading into the Championships on Saturday. Green River definitely showed up with a lot of determination and hit the water aggressively during the Prelims.
The following swimmers and divers moved on to the Championship rounds: Logan Wadsworth, Andrew Neher, Dallan Owens, Ashton Hafner, Colin Gilmore, Mitchell Horn, Vance Lauriski-Adams, Aiden Zimmerman, Arden Lamb, Keegan Gailey, Tieler Ballard and Irie Kuball.
During the final heats, the swimmers stepped out in their parkas and walked in a line to the pool's blocks. The cheering from the crowds and loud music filled the room and then a moment of silence as the swimmers got ready to dive in the water. You could hear screams of excitement as each athlete gave everything they had. Everyone was wanting to win.
In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the Wolves'"A" relay team finished in fifth place, dropping 1.57 seconds, with a time of 1:55.87. The swimmers were Wadsworth, Neher, Owens and Hafner.
Colin Gilmore earned the Champion title in the 200 Yard Freestyle, with a final time of 1:54.10. He tore through the water and beat Lander's Sequeil Lozier who came in second along with Evanston's Wyatt Sawyer who came in third. Green River's Horn finished in eighth place along with Lauriski-Adams in 11th.
Hafner came in sixth place in the 200 Yard IM with a final time of 2:26.10 and Owens finishing 11th. In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Zimmerman finished in sixth place with a time of 24.05. Hafner finished in eighth place in the 100 Yard Butterfly and Owens finished in ninth. Wadworth took 10th place in the 100 Yard Backstroke along with Lamb in 11th. In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Neher finished in 12th place.
In the One-Meter Diving event, Gailey improved 104.15 points and took third place with a final score of 393.25. Ballard finished in sixth place with 305.35 points along with Kuball in seventh with 299.
In the 100 Yard Freestyle event, Zimmerman took an impressive second place with a time of 53.03, right behind Lander's Benny Kulow who came in first. Zimmerman earned All-Conference honors with a second place finish. Horn had a great swim and came in ninth place.
Gilmore earned another Conference Champion title in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Gilmore dropped 5.69 seconds and flew past Kemmerer's Malachi Villarreal, who came in second place. Wadsworth dropped 2.16 seconds and claimed eight place while Lauriski-Adams dropped 1.79 seconds and claimed ninth.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Green River's "A" relay team sped through the pool and took third place with a final score of 1:36.48. The swimmers were Zimmerman, Neher, Horn and Gilmore.
Green River's "A" relay team had an amazing race in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The swimmers included Zimmerman, Neher, Horn and Gilmore. The Wolves dropped 8.26 seconds and finished in second place with a time of 3:34.53. Lander's "A" team took first and Evanston took third.
Head Coach Colleen Seiloff said she is very proud of all the boys. She said it was exciting watching them and seeing how competitive they have become. She added that they will start resting after the Last Chance meet and just keep working on fine tuning and preparing for State.
"We actually did a lot of growth this year," explained Diving Coach Rick Barker. "I'm very pleased with the way the boys look all the way around, top to bottom."
The Last Chance meet is taking place today in in Green River at the Aquatic Center at 4 p.m. This will be the last chance the boys have to qualify for the State Championships that will take place in Laramie on February 16th and 17th.
