Lady Wolves struggle to get a win against Rock Springs and Kelly Walsh

The Green River Lady Wolves played the Rock Springs Lady Tigers last Thursday in Rock Springs. Green River and Rock Springs both started the game with a lot of intensity. At the end of the first quarter, Green River had scored 15 points while Rock Springs scored 16. The game took a turn in the second quarter when Green River only scored two points and allowed Rock Springs to score seven points. Falling behind hurt the Lady Wolves, so they came back on the court in the third quarter with a lot of good energy and outscored Rock Springs with 12 points to the Lady Tigers' eight. Green River had an unfortunate fourth quarter, only scoring seven points while Rock Springs scored 12. The Lady Wolves fell to the Lady Tigers with a final score of 36-43.

Madison Moffatt led the team with 14 points, along with Brianna Strauss scoring three three-point shots. Isabella Vasco scored two three-point shots and had five steals. Addison Demaret helped the team with six rebounds, six assists and six blocks, while Nicole Wilson also had six rebounds.

Head Coach Rick Carroll said the girls played with good energy during the game but just turned the ball over too much. He said when that happens, it takes away a lot of opportunities to score.

"We've just got to clean up our game," explained Coach Carroll. "We are not getting as many possessions so we're getting fewer shots, and then we're giving them more possession so they're getting more shots."

He said they are continually working fast and hard at practice, making sure they're passing the ball, making it more game-like, and hopefully that will translate down the road.

On Saturday, the Lady Wolves traveled to Casper to play the Kelly Walsh Lady Trojans. It was an intense first quarter, with both teams scoring 15 points. In the second quarter, both teams were playing strong but Green River fell behind, scoring 12 points to Kelly Walsh's 16. Green River ran into trouble again, turning the ball over too much and struggling to get the points they needed to get ahead of Kelly Walsh. In the third quarter, Green River scored six points to Kelly Walsh's 13, and in the final quarter, Green River scored nine points while Kelly Walsh scored 13 more points. The Lady Wolves lost the game with a final score of 42-57.

Vasco led the Wolves with 10 points and four steals along with Strauss and Moffatt with nine points each. Demaret and Sophia Arnold had 10 rebounds each and Demaret also had four blocks and four assists.

"I thought we came out and played pretty darn good for a couple quarters," said Coach Carroll. "Then we let them get a little bit of a run and never came back from it."

He thinks they got in too big of a hurry and instead of getting some quality shots to get back in the game, they have the tendency to throw the ball away instead. He said they had a turnover issue again during this game. He hopes to keep working on improving these issues and finding a good balance so they can get back to winning games.

The Lady Wolves will take a break from traveling and will host a game against Riverton on Friday at 6 p.m. They will play another home game on Saturday against Cody at 2 p.m.
