Wolves learn to compete under pressure and see time improvements

Winter storms and road closures are finally starting to affect the winter sports in Wyoming. The Green River Wolves Swimming and Diving team headed to Cheyenne to compete, but ended up competing in a dual on Friday against Laramie. Swimming against a tough 4A team, the Wolves had a lot of great performances and they are learning how to compete under pressure.

Keegan Gailey led the Wolves in first place in the One-Meter Diving event, along with Colin Gilmore snagging first place in the 100 Yard Backstroke and Mitchell Horn taking first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Green River's "A" Relay team also took first in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The swimmers were Ashton Hafner, Vance Lauriski-Adams, Horn and Gilmore. There were also stand-out performances from Gilmore taking second place in the 200 Yard IM, Irie Kuball taking third place in the One-Meter Diving, and Andrew Neher taking second place and Dallan Owens taking third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Lauriski-Adams came in second place while Arden Lamb came in third in the 100 Yard Backstroke. In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Green River's "A" Relay team had an impressive second-place finish. The swimmers were Andrew Neher, Kuball, Hafner and Gilmore. Green River ended the dual with 75 points to Laramie's 100 points.

On Saturday, the Wolves competed in the Cheyenne Invitational against six teams. There were quite a few tough 4A teams competing, and the Wolves held their own, coming away with a fourth-place finish. The two-a-day practices have taken a toll on the athletes, and a lot of them are very tired right now. But the practices have also helped them make time cuts and prepare for the Conference and State Championships.

"We are still really young," said Head Coach Colleeen Seiloff. "But they are very competitive and I was happy with the way they swam and I think they did even better on Saturday."

The Wolves are hosting a meet against Rock Springs and Rawlins today at 4 p.m. On Friday, The University of Wyoming's Swim and Dive team will be competing at the Green River Aquatic Center against the University of Utah. Coach Seiloff is excited for the boys to watch this meet because she would like her team to see how these college athletes swim and see their warm up routines. She said there is a lot they can learn from them. The Wolves will also be helping out with timing the meet. Green River will then travel to compete in the Lander Invite on Saturday at 10 a.m.
