Wolves soccer wins the 3A Consolation Championship

On the first day of the 3A State Championships that were hosted in Green River, the Green River Wolves stepped on the field to play the Torrington Trailblazers. The Wolves out-possessed Torrington during the game and had lots of shots at the goal, but unfortunately at the end of the game Green River didn't get the ball in the net. Leading the team with one goal was Braxton Cordova. Green River lost to Torrington with a final score of 1-2. With a loss, Green River was sent to the consolation bracket.

Head Coach Josh Webb thinks their nerves got the best of them and they could have scored numerous times. They had three shots go off the crossbar and one off the bar.

"It was a heartbreaker," said Coach Webb. "They executed the game exactly like I wanted them to, so they shouldn't hang their heads at that loss."

On Friday, Green River played the Powell Panthers. The Wolves were making great decisions on the field, they out-possessed Powell, and their time management was on point.

Leading the team were Braxton Cordova with two goals and Maddux Hintz with one goal.

Hintz had a header off a corner kick and scored the last point for Green River, winning the game with a final score of 3-2.

"They have improved every game phenomenally," explained Coach Webb. "Their decision making with the ball was ten times better than it was from the Torrington game."

On Saturday, Green River played their last game of the championships against the Lander Tigers. In the first half of the game, Green River scored two goals to Lander's one goal. The second half of the game, Green River dominated the field, scoring three more goals and winning the game with a final score of 5-1 and becoming the 3A State Consolation Champions.

Leading the team was Guy Grace with three goals, along with one goal each from Braxton Cordova and Christian Lee.

"The way they played was beautiful," said Coach Webb. "It's probably our best game all year. They possessed the ball, created opportunities and were marking the vertical runs in midfield. They played very, very well."

One of the team captains, Braxton Cordova, thinks the team was nervous their first game when they lost to Torrington but then realized they needed to get their nerves together and did very well and dominated the next two games.

"I'm very proud of how we did," said Cordova. "I want to thank my teammates for playing with me all these years, and I think the underclassmen have a bright future ahead them."

Cordova was also thankful to the coach for how he helped the team.

"Coach Webb really taught us how to possess the ball to score and how to play out of pressure, so I really appreciate him for giving us that style of play," he added.

Ending the season, Coach Webb said he is very excited for next year. The development he has seen in the boys has been amazing and he feels they play with grit and heart and he "couldn't ask for a better team." The overall improvement and decision making with the ball has been outstanding. He is extremely proud of the boys and their 12-3 record for the season.

Braxton Cordova, Braxton Doak and AB Vergara received All-State Honors and All-Conference Honors. The coaches voted for Axel Mackinnon and Stone Rubeck to receive All-Conference Honors along with Honorable Mentions Guy Grace, Dusten Berg and Izyk Arellano.

Coach Webb, assistant coaches Tina Rodriguez and Toby Trumble and volunteers Greg Doak and Perri Rubeck did an amazing job coaching the boys soccer team this year and helping them to achieve a lot of success on the field.
