The Green River Wolves traveled to play a conference game against the Cody Broncs last Thursday. Cody scored two goals in the first half of the game and held Green River from scoring. In the second half, Green River was unable to get the ball in the net but played amazing defense and held Cody from scoring. Braxton Cordova, Maddux Hintz, Braxton Doak and Izyk Arellano had shots during the game along with Eddie Zarate with four saves. Green River lost the game with a final score of 0-2.
"The boys played very well," said Head Coach Josh Webb. "We out-possessed and we out-played Cody and we had our chances to score but we could't find the net."
On Friday, Green River played their last conference game against the Powell Panthers. Green River played a great defensive game, keeping the Panthers from scoring a goal during the first half. Green River scored one goal and took the lead. Powell scored two goals during the second half of the game and Green River scored one goal, tying up the game. Green River won the sudden death shootout in the second death stage 6-5.
"During the shootout, Braxton Doak and Izyk Arellano sunk the ball and have really stepped up as freshman this year," explained Coach Webb. "AB Vergara sunk the last point in the left corner of the net and we won the game."
Leading the team was Braxton Cordova with two goals along with Eddie Zarate with four saves.
Coach Webb is extremely proud of his players. He says they work hard, they have grit, they have heart and they are a very coachable group. The seniors he has this year have been the backbone of the team and have really stepped up when playing a totally different style of play.
"I've had a blast coaching them," added Coach Webb.
Green River will face Torrington during their first match at the State Championships. Coach Webb feels they can come away with a win if they take care of the ball, take possession of the ball and look for quality shots. It's also very important to get organized defensively.
"It will be a challenge but I think we should come out on top," said Coach Webb.
Cody, Green River, Powell and Lander will compete in the 3A State Championships from the 3A West Conference.
Green River will play their first championship game today at 2 p.m. against Torrington.
