Lady Wolves soccer ends season with two losses, eliminated from State

The Green River Lady Wolves soccer team traveled to play their last two conference games last week. On Thursday, Green River fell to Cody with a final score of 2-12. The Lady Wolves knew it would be a tough game playing the undefeated Broncs and they are ranked #1 for a reason, as “they punish you for every mistake you make,” said Head Coach Matt Robles. Isabel Vasco and Olivia Morris made one goal each during the game.

On Friday, the Lady Wolves played their last conference game against the Lady Powell Panthers. Green River scored two goals in the first half to Powell’s three goals. In the second half of the game Powell scored another four goals, with Green River only scoring one goal. Green River pushed forward a lot and got exposed defensively for it, and lost with a final score of 3-7. Leading the team was Isabel Vasco with three goals during the game.

“We came out hard and got up early, had tons of chances to build a big lead in the first half but couldn’t find that final pass or finish,” explained Coach Robles.

“The season had a lot of positives, we won more games this year than we did last year,” added Coach Robles. “ We pushed ourselves to be better and I think it was a good starting place for us. I think next year we will continue to grow and make many positive strides towards competing for a trophy at state.”

Green River needed one more conference win to compete in the 3A State Championships. With two losses, the Lady Wolves are eliminated and have finished their season, ranked fifth place in the 3A West Conference. Cody, Powell, Lander and Mountain View will compete in Green River at the 3A State Championships on May 18-20.
