Fire crews battle grass fire

Multiple fire agencies, first responders, and law enforcement officers responded together to a grass fire near Telephone Canyon in Green River Monday afternoon.

Around 3:27 p.m. on Monday, May 1, the Green River Fire Department was dispatched to a wildland fire near the water treatment plant.

"Upon arrival it was observed that the fire was in heavy greasewoods with winds blowing 15 – 20 miles per hour, shifting directions," GRFD explained in a press release.

It took crews several hours to fight the fire, and GRFD urged residents to stay off the road to the plant so trucks could continue moving in and out of the area.

"Fire crews were able to control the fire and had it fully contained by 8:30 p.m.," the press release explained.

The fire ultimately consumed 8.1 acres, according to GRFD.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

"GRFD would like to thank all agencies for their support and response; Sweetwater Combined Communications, Green River Police Department, Castle Rock Ambulance, Sweetwater County Fire District #1, BLM Fire, and BLM Ranger," the press release said.

Sweetwater County Fire District No. 1 said the event was "a great example of local resources working together to help keep each other's communities safe."

SCFD No. 1 also cautioned residents on the ever-present danger of wildfires.

"It may seem like we have lots of moisture and even snow still in some places, but wildland fuels can and will still burn," a post from the SCFD No. 1 Facebook page explained. "Please be safe when outdoors enjoying the warmer weather."
