GRPD announces Interim Chief of Police

The Green River Police Department has announced that the Interim Chief of Police filling the shoes left by Chief Tom Jarvie will be Captain Shaun Sturlaugson.

Sturlaugson has over 23 years of Law Enforcement experience and has been with the GRPD since 2004.

"Shaun has filled in several times for the Chief over the years and has recently shadowed in many other areas, getting up to speed on the duties of the role," the GRPD said. "While Shaun recognizes the challenge, he feels the department and staff are in a good position which will help the transition and help maintain consistency in serving the community."

Chief Tom Jarvie's last day with the police department and the city was last Friday, April 14. The GRPD hosted a gathering for people to wish him well, and the City Council recognized him for his service at the Tuesday night Council meeting.

"The GRPD family would like to express a sincere thank you for all of the well wishes and congratulations sent to Chief Jarvie during his final week with us. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and professionalism, and he will be greatly missed," the police department said in a statement on social media.

When he thought ahead to the transition of power after Jarvie left, Captain Sturlaugson previously expressed his confidence that it would go well.

"There's always difficulties, just growing pains, but I really think that we all have worked together so well and we've all had the same goal in mind, nothing's really going to change all that much," Sturlaugson said. "It should be fairly seamless, I would think."

"We would also like to say thank you for the overwhelming support we've received as we prepare to transition into the future," the GRPD said. "Our goal, as always, is to carry on a tradition of customer service and community partnership, while we continue to work hard to keep our citizens safe and secure. We consider ourselves lucky to be able to serve a community that is so supportive of us, and we know that our success is directly connected to how well we all work together. With your help, we will all continue to make Green River a wonderful place to live."
