Weather takes toll on softball games for Lady Wolves

Snow, go away! It's hard to play softball with the snow that has been dumping in Wyoming. It's been frustrating for the Green River Lady Wolves that their games keep getting canceled.

Green River was able to play one game last week against the Rock Springs Lady Tigers while their games in Worland were canceled over the weekend because of the weather. Some of the teams in the West Conference have yet to play a game this season.

Head Coach Blair Aimone said she was very impressed with how well the girls hit the ball during the game against Rock Springs. It was only the second time the Lady Wolves have been on the field. They are finding out what things they need to work on defensively, but those are minor tweaks that are very fixable, and she is very proud of how well they played.

During the game against Rock Springs, the fields were still in rough shape.

"There was a big puddle in front of their dugout, a huge puddle over by our dugout, and along the left field fence there was snow that came out three to four feet and it was pure ice," explained Coach Aimore.

Both teams agreed for the game to be a "ground-rule double area." What that means is if a player hits the ball out and it hits the snow, they would have to go back to second base. Unfortunately, this affected the outcome of the game for Green River. The Lady Wolves had a great start and had the lead during the game, but Rock Springs came up with 17 unanswered runs. The Lady Wolves had a Grand Slam that was called back because the ball had hit the snow.

During the last inning, Haiden Terry cranked it out there, with a runner on first and second base, and the ball hit the snow. This cost Green River two runs that could have put them ahead of Rock Springs. The Lady Wolves lost the game to Rock Springs with a score of 19-20.

"The girls kept battling and never gave up," added Coach Aimore. "That's something that we didn't see the first year or last year. We've been working on continuing to fight and battle, and the girls did that."

Regardless of the cancellations, Coach Aimore made sure the girls had an enjoyable weekend. On Friday, they split the team into two groups and had a scavenger hunt. The teams went to Apricot Lane, Green River High School, the Dollar Store and Soul Studio for fun activities. They ended their day at the movie theater in Rock Springs where they watched "Champions." On Saturday, for their practice, the Lady Wolves were pampered with a spa day at Beauty & Bliss.

The games against Cody and Worland have been rescheduled for Monday and Tuesday, April 17 and 18.

The Lady Wolves were scheduled to play a conference game against Kelly Walsh and a conference game against Natrona County but both games were cancelled.
