Local girl wrestlers place at Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa

Two girls from Green River competed at the Twin Rivers Girls National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa on March 31 through April 2. To compete at nationals, the girls had to qualify to compete in the National Tournament and both girls qualified at the Ron Thon Tournament in Riverton earlier in the wrestling season. Sixty-three girls from around Wyoming made up teams to represent our state.

Brianna Uhrig received Bronze All-American with a 5-2 individual record. Uhrig wrestled with the Wyoming High School Yellow Team.

Zella Maez received Bronze All-American with a 5-2 individual record. Maez wrestled with the Wyoming High School Brown Team.

All teams were randomly placed in team pools, and the size of the pools was subject to adjustments based on the total number of teams that entered. After pool wrestling, teams were seeded into preliminary brackets based on pool performance and then placed on point differential seeding. The top pool winners advanced to the championship bracket while consolation pool teams had similar competition within consolation brackets based on pool performance.

This was the first year Uhrig and Maez wrestled for the Green River High School and the first national tournament they competed in. It's very impressive for both girls to make it to a national tournament, and both of them received Bronze All-American.
