Council approves police grant, aids quilting committee

The Green River Police Department will receive some extra financial support in its efforts to limit the flow of illicit drugs into the city.

The Green River City Council approved a High Intensity Drug Traffic Area Sub-Contract Award amounting to $182,309 Tuesday evening. According to Council documents, the grant is used to cover the cost of two officer positions to assist the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation’s drug enforcement efforts in Southwest Wyoming. The GRPD has worked in conjunction with DCI for several years and has utilized the funding as part of that agreement.

GRPD Chief Tom Jarvie said the department has received the grant nearly every year for the past 20 years and believes the work the grant pays for is definitely needed in our area.

“Drugs are not coming here because they’re grown in Green River, Wyoming,” Jarvie said. “We’re getting them from Denver, we’re getting them from Salt Lake…we’ve had ties down into the country to our south.”

He said without having people dedicated full time to combatting drug trafficking into Green River, the city would have a larger problem with illegal drugs.

Fiscal Sponsor Letter for Quilting on the Green

The city will help the Quilting on the Green Committee seek grant funding to host its annual event later this year.

The committee plans to apply for a support grant from the Wyoming Arts Council, but is unable to do so because it isn’t a 501(c)(3) organization. To get around this, the city will agree to be the organization’s fiscal sponsor and submit the letter as part of the committee’s grant application. If awarded the grant, the city would then receive the funds and pass them along to the committee. According to Council documents, this agreement will not require funding from the city.

The Council approved the arrangement unanimously.
