Wolves struggle through the water in Gillette

The Green River Wolves Swimming and Diving team made it to the Gillette Invite last weekend despite most of the roads in the state being closed. The team struggled to get points in the swimming events and took a fifth-place finish out of 10 teams.

It was no surprise that Green River's Braxton Cordova took another first-place finish in the 1-Meter Diving event. He has been working very hard this year to complete his dives and his hard work has shown in his top performances.

Brady Young took first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle event and took 0.91 seconds off his personal best. Shredding seconds off every week, he is proving that he has what it takes to finish on top. Sophomore Colin Gilmore had an unfortunate DQ in the event.

Gilmore had an amazing third-place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle, while Young got disqualified. Losing points usually gained by Young and having swimmers that couldn't compete really hurt the scoreboard for the Wolves.

They had some swimmers that were trying to qualify but didn't quite make it. They are getting closer and letting them rest a little this week, will hopefully allow them to hit their qualifying times this weekend or at the Last Chance Meet.

"I am a little worried just because we have kids that are sick right now," said Head Coach Colleen Seiloff. "But if we are going to be sick, I'd rather be sick for conference and get over it before state."

It was still a great experience to swim in the Gillette pool, especially for the boys that have never been there for a meet. They got to swim, get the jitters out, and now they know what it is like to compete in the state pool. Seiloff feels they need to mentally get them prepared too, so it was important to travel to Gillette for the meet.

With the roads closed on Saturday, the team had to stay the night in Casper and finally got to head home on Sunday. On their way back they helped out a bus full of the Green River High School Debate team that had broken down. They had the team and coaches climb aboard and they all traveled home together.

Green River will travel to Lander and compete in the 3A West Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday. Conference allows the team to see where their strengths and weaknesses are individually and as a team in fast-paced races. The Wolves will host their Last Chance meet at 4 p.m. next Thursday. The Last Chance meet will be the last competition the boys will have to try and qualify for state. Good luck to the Wolves!
