Lady Wolves hit the court

The Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team hit the court and started practicing last week. As they walked out of the gym door, their faces were red and they looked like they had just ran a marathon. The ladies are showing dedication and are committed to putting in hard work this season.

The Wolves graduated six seniors, five of whom started and one was the first one off the bench, so they have an entirely new starting team this year. They do have six girls that lettered last year and are returning to the team. Some of the girls have played and have the experience that they need and some of them haven't played very much.

"We are trying to put together what the team will look like," stated Head Coach Rick Carroll. "It's fun because we're not sure who's going to be where yet. The first four days have been hectic, but they've been really good practices."

One of the strengths of the young team this year is their height.

"Surprisingly, Green River hasn't been very tall for a long time and we have some decent height as far as the team is concerned," said Carroll.

The coaches are working on teaching the young girls some post moves to see if they can become offensive threats. They are hoping that becomes a strength for the Wolves.

"We're very athletic, and we have some pretty good speed on the floor," Carroll added.

As far as basketball is concerned, it's always a must to work on skills, and there are so many skills in this sport. The team plans on working on shooting and footwork. These are two important factors. When they catch the ball they need to know what they need to do next. Other important skills are passing and dribbling.

"We're young, so we still have a long ways to go with just basic skill development," explained Carroll. "If we get that going, we'll be in pretty good shape."

The ladies had a lot of practices during the summer break and in June they were busy with basketball camps. They really enjoy the different competition they get to experience. During the camps they are always focused on a lot of shooting and handling the ball. Along with the morning practices, they also lift weights to keep in good shape.

"We try like heck to get them in the weight room and that's something ongoing in Green River for all of our athletes. We're trying to make them stronger and faster during offseason," explained Carroll. "If they do that, they come in with some pretty good skills."

Coach Carroll invites everybody to come and watch the ladies basketball this season. It's always nice to see the support from our community.

The Lady Wolves will hit the road for their first game next Thursday and travel to Casper. The Casper Invite will take place December 8 through 10.
