Golfers get All Conference honors

The Green River High School Golf team powered through bad weather and still came away with several successes, including players taking All Conference honors, at the 3A West Conference Tournament in Lander last week.

"Day one was very successful on both the boys' and girls' side," Assistant Coach Danielle Salas said about the tournament.

After the first day, Senior Ryker Mele was sitting at fourth, Sophomore Ashton Lucero was right outside the top 10 sitting at 13th, and the boys' team was sitting in fourth place overall as they headed into day two.

On the girls' side, Junior Isabell Salas was only one stroke off the lead, and Sophomore Taylor Jenny shot her personal tournament low and was sitting in ninth place, leaving the girls team in third place going into the second day.

"Day two was a tough day for both teams as they had to battle low temperatures, high winds, rain and nerves," Coach Salas explained.

Despite those factors, Senior Ryker Mele was the third place medalist, taking All Conference Honors for the second consecutive year. Sophomore Ashton Lucero narrowly missed a top 10 All Conference finish by one stroke, coming in at 12th place. For the girls, Isabell Salas finished in second place, taking All Conference Honors for a record third consecutive year in a row. She is one of very few female golfers to do so from GRHS, Coach Salas explained. Isabell was also one of only four golfers, male or female, to shoot in the 70s both days of competition.

"Many of our team hadn't experienced golfing in conditions like that before so it definitely affected the way they played all the way around," Coach Salas said. "Now that they've experienced a round of golf in full-on Wyoming weather they should be ready for anything that comes their way as they head to Buffalo for State this week."

The team will compete in the 3A State Championships in Buffalo Friday and Saturday.
