Gas blowoff halts I-80

Multiple emergency responders including the Green River Fire Department and Castle Rock Ambulance Service were called to a gas blowoff Monday afternoon that resulted in a temporary closure of Interstate 80.

According to a press release from the Green River Fire Department, the department was dispatched to Mile Marker 95 on I-80 at 4:50 p.m. regarding a natural gas burst in the area. Upon arrival, traffic was diverted to the furthest lane to allow a better assessment of the situation. A GRFD rescue engine was placed in a position of safety to help protect everyone at the scene. After the assessment, the group worked with the Wyoming Highway Patrol to shut down the interstate.

The Joint Powers Combined Communications Dispatch Center was able to determine the owner of the building the gas blowoff was occurring at and placed representatives of the company in contact with emergency responders.

The company was able to determine the blowoff was due to improper carbon dioxide pressure built up in the line and determined it wasn’t natural gas.

Following that revelation, the interstate was opened up for travel and a work crew from Rangely, Colorado was dispatched to repair the line.

“Although it was an inconvenience for travelers and those trying to get home, when dealing with the unknown, as we first responders, police departments, EMS, state troopers, find ourselves doing all the time, we always yield to the side of caution,” Robinson said in the press release. “All though it is an inconvenience, public safety is our top priority.”
