Softball team looks to improve after RS loss

After recent victories, the Green River High School softball team was confident going into their games against Rock Springs last Thursday, but it just wasn’t a good day for them.

“We did terrible,” coach Blair Aimone admitted.

The Lady Wolves ended up losing their conference game against the Lady Tigers 7-0, and losing the second game 9-0.

“If you can’t score you can’t win, and if you don’t catch and you don’t throw you can’t win,” Aimone said. “I don’t know if they got into our heads a little bit or what the deal was, but we couldn’t get our bats awake and our fielding was poor, and when you have those two things that are working at the same time like that, you’re not going to win games.”

Despite the loss, Aimone believes off days can happen to any team, and she wants the girls to focus on what’s coming next.

“We’ve just got to pick ourselves back up and continue to get better every single day that we’re at practice and playing games and build,” Aimone said. “It is what it is, we can’t go back and change it, but we can learn from it and move on.”

This week the Lady Wolves will take on Worland on Friday and Cody on Saturday — the last two conference games of the season.

“Both teams we need to come ready to play,” Aimone said, noting Cody is first in the conference and Worland “is a team that can sneak up and bite you in the butt if you’re not paying attention.”

Despite the tough competition, Aimone believes the Green River girls are capable of competing with both teams as long as they play an error-free game and focus on playing ball the way they do best.

“It’s gonna be an exciting weekend,” Aimone said. “What we do this weekend will determine whether or not we make it to the state tournament, so it’s exciting. And we want to put ourselves always in a position that we make it to state. That’s our goal every single year. And we’ve done that, but now we’ve just got to take care of business and finish the job.”

Eight out of 13 teams across Wyoming will compete together at the state competition in Gillette May 19-21, and if they can get a win this weekend, the Lady Wolves will join them.
