Softball team defeats Rock Springs

After their originally scheduled match was postponed due to inclement weather, the Green River High School Softball Team took on their rivals from Rock Springs last Wednesday, winning their conference match 13-8.

“The girls’ bats were on fire,” coach Blair Aimone said.

The Lady Wolves ended up with 12 runs in the first three innings and six extra-base hits, including a home run, throughout the game.

“The girls just rose to the performance,” Aimone said. “It’s always going to be a dogfight with Rock Springs.”

The rivalry between Green River and Rock Springs always makes for tough games, and the team can never get enough runs, Aimone explained. She said it’s important to always be looking for more opportunities to score, which the girls did in the first game.

Aimone also pointed out that while she thinks Green River is a better team than Rock Springs this year, the team members can’t get complacent or take things for granted, because the other team can always come from behind, as they did in the second game last Wednesday.

During the second game against Rock Springs, the Lady Wolves started out 11-0, but they gave Rock Springs too many extra outs, according to Aimone. Rock Springs ended up winning that game 14-12 after a six-run sixth inning.

“There’s stuff that we can always build on,” Aimone said. “We found some new things to work on.”

Areas where she wants the team members to continue improving include looking ahead to the next play and not giving teams extra outs.

But Aimone is also proud of how much the girls have improved when it comes to seeing the ball and hitting the ball, including getting solid home runs.

The Lady Wolves will have more chances to improve during this weekend’s matches against Natrona County on Friday and Kelly Walsh on Saturday. Green River has faced both teams once already this season in close games, and Aimone is confident the girls are even more prepared to win now.

“The biggest thing is we just don’t want to stay complacent,” Aimone said. “We want to build on each and every game, on each and every practice, and get better every single day that we’re out there. And these kids are doing that, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. And we’re not done. Our goal is to make the state and we’re headed in that right direction.”
