Lady Wolves tie first away game, lose to Jackson

The Lady Wolves fought to keep up with their opponents during their first two games on the road, coming away with one tie and one loss.

The Green River High School Girls Soccer Team headed to Star Valley last Thursday, where they battled into overtime and ended the game with a 4-4 tie.

"It was a pretty physical match," coach Matthew Robles said of the game.

Robles explained the game was Star Valley's home opener, which the team was excited for, and the Lady Wolves' first away game, which led to them starting out tired after getting off the bus. Green River started the game down 2-0 at halftime after Star Valley scored early on.

"But we fought back," Robles said.

Ella Stanton scored off a free kick, "which was beautifully taken," according to Robles, and Brynlee Doak tied the game 2-2 with a header. The Lady Wolves gave up a goal to Star Valley, but tied the game again with about five minutes left after "an absolute laser" of a goal by Ellie Kettering that Robles said was "beautiful."

The game went into overtime, which is a guaranteed two halves lasting 10 minutes each. Star Valley scored early on, but Kettering came back for the Lady Wolves and scored with only about eight seconds left on the clock.

"It was pretty intense and emotional," Robles said. "But it was a good experience for us to be on the road and face that adversity right off the bat."

The adversity on the road continued when Green River headed to Jackson on Saturday, but this time the Lady Wolves weren't able to fight back as effectively, losing the game 3-1.

"Jackson's good," Robles admitted.

The Lady Wolves held out without Jackson scoring against them for almost the entire first half, but Jackson made their first goal with 10 seconds left before overtime. Jackson then came back with two more goals in the second half. The Lady Wolves managed to get a goal with about 90 seconds left in the game, once again scored by Kettering, who has been doing especially well this season, according to Robles.

Going into their next games, Robles wants the girls to focus on playing hard through the entire game.

"I would really like to see them play a full 80 minutes," Robles said, explaining he thinks past games could have been closer or turned out differently if the girls had been able to play for another 10 or 15 minutes.

Today at 3 p.m. the Lady Wolves will once again face Rock Springs, this time on the Lady Tigers' home turf. Although Rock Springs beat Green River once already this season, Robles hopes this game will be closer and more difficult for the Lady Tigers.

Robles feels more confident about Green River's match with Evanston on Friday, which will play a big part in determining Green River's seeding for regionals. Since the Lady Wolves beat Evanston earlier in the season, Robles is confident they can win again, but he also is careful not to count his chickens before they're hatched.

"Anything can happen on the road," Robles said. "We'll try to build some momentum heading into our last week of travels with the regular season."
