Lady Wolves soccer has strong wins, 1 loss

Last week was a strong one for the Green River High School girls soccer team as they faced off against Star Valley and Evanston.

The Lady Wolves took on Star Valley last Tuesday, April 5, and came away with a 3-2 win. Although the final score looked close due to goals made by Star Valley with only about 12 minutes left, Green River led 3-0 for the majority of the time, with all three goals being scored by Ellie Kettering, achieving a hat trick.

“We dominated that game against Star Valley pretty much start to finish,” coach Matthew Robles said.

The game against Evanston last Friday went similarly well for the Lady Wolves, who came away with a 2-0 win. Kettering scored another goal against Evanston, with Claira Kuball getting the second point in the game.

Despite their wins last week, this week didn’t go as well for the Lady Wolves as they had a tough game with Rock Springs Tuesday, losing 9-0.

“Rock Springs got up on us early and we couldn’t really find our way back into the game,” Robles said.

One of the main differences between last week and this week was the team members’ mentalities, according to Robles.

He believes the girls saw last week’s games as winnable but they expected to lose against Rock Springs after the way last year’s competition went.

Despite the loss, Robles is still happy the team is starting to score and win more often, but he also realizes there are still things to work on, including better communication and closing out games.

“All seasons are a project and it just takes time to get them all figured out,” Robles said.

The Lady Wolves have two more games this weekend, hosting Kelly Walsh Friday at 4 p.m. and Natrona County Saturday at 10 a.m. The game against Natrona County will also be Green River’s senior recognition game since it is the last home game of the season.

Natrona County and Kelly Walsh are currently ranked in the first and second places respectively in the conference, which will provide Green River with tough competition this week, but Robles is hopeful the team will rally.

“They’re going to be stiff tests for us,” Robles said. “But if we pick our heads up and don’t hang them all game long we’ll be able to fix some things.”
