The Green River High School girls basketball team had one big win and one close loss last week, leaving them 4-3 in conference and 10-7 for the season.
With the support of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Lady Wolves took on Riverton at home last Friday night and came away with a 65-26 win.
"Sometimes you get into that flow where everything's going well and it makes everything easier," Coach Rick Carroll said, describing the win.
The team members moved the ball well and stayed relaxed which helped them shoot well, and the defense stayed strong through the game, particularly in the second half, according to Carroll. He also believed Riverton's team struggled to take care of the ball, resulting in 23 turnovers which allowed the Lady Wolves to get some easy baskets.
Leading the scoring against Riverton were Daryn Macy with 16 points and Megan Counts and Sarah Wilson with 15 points each. Macy and Counts also contributed eight rebounds each, and Counts and Wilson had five assists each.
On Saturday the Lady Wolves took on Cody, a team which has been undefeated through the season and remained undefeated after beating Green River 51-45.
Despite the close loss, the Lady Wolves fought to keep things neck-and-neck throughout the game. Green River had 12 turnovers while Cody had 11, and shooting percentages put Green River at 57% and Cody at 58%.
"It's one of those games where both teams just really were playing pretty well, and that's kind of reflected in the way the final score ended up," Carroll said.
While trying to keep pace with the number one team in the conference, the Green River girls made a few small mistakes that ended up costing them the win. Carroll believes the players occasionally got in too big of a hurry, lost their discipline, and took a few shots they shouldn't have.
"We've just got to figure out some things that we can do better so that if we happen to see them again down the road, we can turn that score around," Carroll said.
For now, the Lady Wolves will focus on their upcoming games, facing Evanston today and taking on Star Valley at home this Saturday. Star Valley and Evanston are ranked fifth and sixth in the conference, with Green River coming in just ahead of them in fourth place.
"We just need to play good basketball and see if we can't change our position a little bit before season ends," Carroll said.
