Lady Wolves take two conference losses

After winning their first three conference games, the Green River High School girls basketball team suffered two defeats last weekend, leaving them 3-2 in conference so far.

“It was a tough week for the Green River world, that’s for sure,” Coach Rick Carroll said.

The team took on their rivals in Rock Springs last Thursday, losing 57-40, then headed to Casper to play Natrona County on Saturday where they lost 64-45.

“We really throughout both games struggled with turnovers and didn’t do a good job of finding the open folks and turned the ball over a lot,” Carroll explained. “Casper pressed us and caused some of those issues but I think we just weren’t doing a good job of getting the ball where we needed to and just not taking very good care of the basketball.”

While the team did well with rebounding, even better than their opponents in both games, they didn’t take advantage of the rebounds in order to score baskets, according to Carroll.

Despite the struggles and ultimate defeat, several team members contributed to the team’s efforts. In the game against Rock Springs, Megan Counts scored 18 points and Sarah Wilson led the rebounding effort with five rebounds. Against Natrona County, Counts had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Daryn Macy also scored 12 points and Ella Stanton had six rebounds and four steals.

Looking forward to upcoming games, Carroll wants the team to work on the issues that hurt them last week, including taking better care of the ball and not being in too big of a hurry.

“We need to get back to playing confidently,” Carroll added. “I think we lost a little confidence during the course of last week.”

This week the Lady Wolves will take on Riverton on Friday and Cody on Saturday. While Riverton has been struggling this year, they play hard, according to Carroll. Going against Cody, Green River will be taking on one of the two undefeated teams in the state this year. Both games will be big, Carroll said, but every conference game is important since it determines the team’s seeding at the state tournament.

“We need to go out there and get some wins so we can work towards moving that up a little bit so we can move closer to the front,” Carroll said. “We’re just really looking to play a lot better basketball this week.”
