Lady Wolves go 2-1 at Cheyenne invitational

The Lady Wolves basketball team still showed their opponents they’re a force to be reckoned with during the Taco John’s Invite in Cheyenne over the weekend.

The girls won two of their three games, defeating Cheyenne Central 56-54 and Wheatland 55-29, but took a 64-38 loss to Cheyenne East.

Overall, head coach Rick Carroll said the Lady Wolves played well despite not having the full team available.

He said Gabrielle Heiser missed the invitational due to illness. Regardless, the other Lady Wolves, including Megan Counts, Daryn Macy, Oakley Hanks and Sarah Wilson, helped fortify the team to cover her absence. Carroll said Counts had a great weekend in particular, scoring 45 over the three games.

One problem that plagued the Lady Wolves throughout the weekend is what Carroll describes as the team getting in a hurry to score. This issue came up against Central, which Carroll said resulted in the Lady wolves turning over the ball more frequently. The problem allowed Central to make a comeback in the second half, with the team outscoring the Lady Wolves in the second half.

The Lady Wolves handled the team from Wheatland well, with Carroll saying they were able to hassle them throughout the game and didn’t turn the ball over as often as they had in the game against Central.

However, their issue with getting hurried returned when they took on East in their final game. The Lady Wolves kept the game close throughout the first half, ending with a three-point deficit to East 24-21.

The girls fell further behind in the third, before East was able to score 23 points to Green River’s seven in the fourth.

“We kept up pretty good until the fourth,” Carroll said.

Carroll said he is working with the Lady Wolves to not feel as hurried when playing, as well as keeping better control of the ball when they have possession.

The team will travel to Gillette to take on Thunder Basin Friday. Carroll said the team has always played an aggressive and physical style of basketball that focuses on full-court zone presses and an ability to move the ball quickly down the court.

Carroll said the team also has several skilled players as well.

However, Carroll says the Lady Wolves are a good team as well, playing cohesively with a focus on teamwork. He’s pleased with the effort the girls have shown in both practice and on the court.

“They’re working for the good of the team,” he said.
