Boys swim season starts strong despite 'bumps'

The Wolves swim team had a strong start to the season with four qualifiers, despite setbacks due to both weather and team members being out.

“We only ended up getting to swim once this weekend,” Coach Colleen Seiloff explained. “We were supposed to go to Laramie.”

The Laramie relays and pentathlon scheduled for the weekend were effectively canceled due to the road closures on Interstate 80. According to Seiloff, the Laramie team swam by themselves because no one else could make it.

“Luckily Lyman was gracious enough to let us get in and swim,” Seiloff said. The Wolves were a late addition to the Lyman invite, which was also attended by Kemmerer, Rawlins and Sublette County.

The Wolves left the meet with three divers and one swimmer qualifying for state.

“It was a good weekend,” Seiloff said. “It was good just to get to see where our new guys are and kind of what they can do and what they can’t do.”

Green River came in third place out of the five competing teams. Seiloff thought the team did well, especially considering they weren’t able to swim with a full team.

“We have a few people that were out from being sick or shoulder injuries,” she explained. “We won’t be at full capacity probably until well after Christmas.”

However, Seiloff noted one advantage of swimming as compared to other sports is the scores and placements at individual meets don’t matter as much.

“We could lose every competition all season long, and if we get it together for state, then we’re there,” she said. “We’re swimming to get qualifiers, we’re swimming to just get better, and you know, you can take your bumps along the way and it’s ok.”

Despite the bumps to start off the season, Seiloff was pleased with the team, and is optimistic about the future.

“We have a lot of growing to do,” she admitted. “But what a good group of kids to coach. It’s been fun. They’re working very hard.”

This week the team competed in Lander and will host a home invite this Friday and Saturday.

Seiloff was excited about the chance to compete in Lander and face stronger competition, including Jonny Kulow, who swam in the Olympic trials in June.

“I’m just a big advocate of going out and competing against people that are better than you, because I think that makes you better too,” Seiloff said. “It’ll be good for all of our young crew, to see where they need to be.”

Seiloff also looks forward to this weekend’s home meet, since it will give the team members a chance to show their strengths.

“It’ll be good to be at our home and our pool,” she said. “Green River’s always had kind of a tradition of just swimming really well at home. So it’ll be good to be able to perform in front of all of our family.”
