Green River High School to get culinary arts remodel

Green River High School is on track to renovate its culinary arts room following action by the Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees two weeks ago.

The board agreed to seek a construction manager at risk for the upcoming renovation project, with costs not to exceed $1 million.

GRHS Principal Darren Heslep said the project seeks to update the program into something that will provide more job opportunities for students. Currently, the program focuses on helping students learn how to prepare meals for a family, but he says the program and the equipment in the room are outdated. The plan is to refit the culinary arts room with commercial equipment and update the program itself to help train students for culinary jobs.

According to district documents, the work would be completed by August 2022, with the selection of a construction manager to take place by Dec. 7.

Initially, the project was set to not exceed $2.5 million, but the amount was cut back to $1 million at the request of Board Member Mark Saunders, who said the project could be accomplished at the $1 million mark. The other board members unanimously approved the amendment.
