Swimmers continue their winning ways

The Green River High School swim team is staying strong with mostly wins at the midpoint of the season.

The team brought home two more wins last weekend, beating Lander at their dual meet on Sept. 23 and taking first against four other schools at the Evanston Invite on Sept. 25, beating Rock Springs in second place by more than 80 points.

The team also picked up one more qualifier last weekend, meaning 10 girls have currently qualified for state, according to Coach Colleen Seiloff. Several other swimmers are close to qualifying, so Seiloff hopes to have even more qualifiers for the competition in the next few weeks.

“We’re right in the middle part of the season,” Seiloff said. “It’s the tough part, this is where you’re tired, and the yardage has increased. But they’re hanging in really well.”

Seiloff said the team is solid and competitive. They will need their competitive spirit this coming weekend, when they travel across the state to compete in Cheyenne and Laramie.

Seiloff looks forward to the team going up against bigger 4A schools that are known to have strong swimming teams.

“It’s just some different competition and it’s good for the girls to be competitive with different people,” Seiloff said. “Win or lose, I think we learn a lot from going against people that are better than us.”

While everyone on the team is doing well, several students are standing out, according to Seiloff.

“We have a great group of freshmen that have come in this year,” Seiloff noted. “They’re definitely contributors right off the bat.”

Tanith Smith is one of the freshmen who joined the team with previous swimming experience and has been standing out so far.

Smith has taken first place in multiple events at multiple competitions.

Seiloff believes the team has done well across the board, but said that the focus is always to keep improving individually and having fun, and to see where that takes the team by the end of the season.

“If we win state, we win state, if we don’t, at least we can say that we did the best that we could,” Seiloff said. “This is a competitive group of girls. They’re working hard, so we’ll see where we go.”
