High school tennis teams see mixed results in Casper

Green River High School's tennis program had some highs and lows last week, defeating Rock Springs at home before taking on Natrona County and Kelly Walsh in the same day Aug. 27.

"It was a long day for us, we didn't get home until midnight," head coach Phil Harder said.

Against Rock Springs, the teams sent the Tigers back home with a loss. The boys were able to sweep their matches while the girls only lost the No. 3 doubles contest. The matches against Natrona County told a similar story, with the boys sweeping the Mustangs while the Lady Wolves only took losses in No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles.

That all changed when the Green River squads took on Kelly Walsh. The boys team from Kelly Walsh are the defending state champions while the girls were the runners up to Cheyenne Central's state championship team.

"They're probably the best team in the state - boys and girls both," Harder said.

Both tennis teams were winless against the Kelly Walsh players.

Despite struggles against a very strong group of players, Harder said the players are doing well and continue to improve. This week, he and the coaching staff are focusing on volleys and returning the serve. Harder said everything they're working on right now is towards securing great seeding at Regionals.

Green River took on Rock Springs a second time Tuesday at RSHS, defeating the Tigers a second time.

The team will travel to Rawlins Friday and Laramie Saturday for more competition.
