GR firefighters battle hay fire

A truck fire resulted in a long night for Green River firefighters Monday evening, causing a fire requiring the response from five other emergency response agencies.

According to Larry Erdmann, assistant chief of the Green River Fire Department, emergencies services were dispatched to a tractor-trailer fire at the intersection of Wyoming Highway 372 and Wyoming Highway 28. The GRFD joined firefighters from the Sweetwater County Fire Department and Bureau of Land Management Fire. Castle Rock Ambulance Service, the Wyoming Highway Patrol and the Seedskadee National Wildland Refuge Law Enforcement also responded.

Ermann said the truck's driver dropped part of a load of hay being transported after noticing it had caught fire. After seeing the trailer was on fire, the driver disconnected the truck and moved it from the trailer. Erdmann said the hay was a total loss, resulting in firefighters focusing their efforts on the trailer.

After the trailer fire was extinguished, firefighters turned their attention to several piles of hay that was still burning. Ermann said fire crews and law enforcement were at the scene until about 3:30 a.m. At about 7 a.m., the BLM and county fire department brought equipment to spread the hay and cool any remaining hotspots.
