Texas company donates to GR students

"Everywhere we go we try to give back to the community," Rick Haydon said.

Haydon was one of the representatives from Peterson Beckner Industries (PBI) who brought backpacks full of school supplies to the Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Central Office last Friday.

PBI is a steel erection company out of Houston, Texas, that is currently working at the Genesis Alkali Granger facility. Haydon said the $350 million project will last until the spring. Local workers were hired for the project, but PBI also has employees who are staying in Sweetwater County during the work.

"It has been a great pleasure to be here and we appreciate what Green River and your community are affording us and we just want to give back a little," Nicky Parker, PBI's project administrator said.

To give back, PBI ironworkers filled 160 backpacks with school supplies for students in the second to fifth grades, including notebooks, pencils, crayons, scissors and more. The backpacks will be distributed to local students in need for the start of the new school year.

Representatives from the district accepted the backpack donation, including Superintendent Craig Barringer, Board Chairman Steve Core and Board Clerk Robin Steiss.

"This can make a dramatic difference in kids' lives," Steiss said, looking over the backpacks with tears in her eyes.
