For head coach Chris Nielsen, his first year with the Lady Wolves is like starting a new soccer program.
With the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the 2020 spring sports season, both soccer programs, as well as the track program are starting back up after a year absence.
Nielsen said his younger players have not competed at the high school level at all, while many of his juniors have only played junior varsity soccer. Nielsen while he’s still trying to learn the team’s pulse, he believes they will be ready for their first match at Wolves Stadium Friday.
The game will take place against Star Valley at 3 p.m. A second game against Evanston is set to start at 11 a.m., Saturday.
Nielsen said he’s focused the last week of practices on how the team should look and play while on the field. It’s work he thinks will serve them well in their first matches.
Nielsen isn’t a stranger to high school soccer, having coached junior varsity for seven years before applying to take the head varsity coach slot that opened in 2019.
He said he’s looking forward to helping the girls achieve their individual and team goals, while working to spread the love of soccer in Green River.
Overall, he said he wants to build a positive culture of performance on the field each time the Lady Wolves step out to complete.
