Boys break even at tourney

The Wolves faced strong teams from Gillette and Kelly Walsh during the Flaming Gorge Classic tournament they hosted in Green River, with the boys coming up short against the team from Campbell County, but rebounding in their second game.

Head coach Laurie Ivie said the Wolves dug themselves into a big deficit during the first half, with the Wolves trailing 29-42. The Wolves spent much of the third quarter closing on Gillette.

“We brought it to within four, but ran out of steam,” Ivie said.

The final score was 79-70.

“We played a great second half of basketball against the Camels, and ended up 22 of 24 from the free throw line. But, we have to put a solid four quarters together to win big games,” she said.

The following night, the Wolves were able to earn a hard-found win over Kelly Walsh 55-52, but Ivie sees a few issues the Wolves need to improve.

“In both the (Gillette) and the (Kelly Walsh) game we had way too many turnovers. We have to take better care of the basketball,” Ivie said.

While there are a few things to iron out, she did see some improvements over the Wolves’ first weekend of competition.

“We had moments during the weekend where we looked good. We pushed the ball up the court, shared the ball, found open shooters, and out rebounded both teams,” she said.

As with the Lady wolves, the boys will travel to Cheyenne Jan. 8-9 for more tournament action. They will take on Cheyenne East and Central. They also had a game scheduled against Laramie Tuesday evening, though the results of that game were unavailable at press time.

Ivie said the team will practice after taking some time off for Christmas and focus on continued improvement.

“Our biggest focus will be on us - getting better every, single day so that we are playing our final game on March 13.”
