City receives major award

The Green River Parks and Recreation Department received a prestigious award from the National Recreation and Park Association for its management of the city’s parks and its public programs.

The city received the Gold Medal Grand Plaque for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management Monday evening during the Green River City Council meeting.

The city joins four other communities in receiving the award this year, with the city being chosen for municipalities of 30,000 residents or less.

The city is the first in Wyoming to receive the award. It was also a finalist for the award in 2011.

The city was informed during the annual NRPA conference last week.

“I know we have a gold-medal staff,” Parks and Recreation Director Brad Raney said Monday.

The award isn’t given to cities with massive budgets or projects, but given to departments based on how they use the resources they’re allocated. Less than 1% of all parks and recreation departments receive the award.

Raney said the award doesn’t only reflect the park’s department as it works with other departments to maintain the parks and provide services to residents.

“Everybody should be proud of this ... it’s not just parks and recreation,” Raney said.
