Census period winds down for Green River

With the end of this year quickly approaching, it is time to fill out your 2020 census.

The census can be filled out online, through a phone call to the number provided on the website or through the paper questionnaire sent by mail. The census asks a few simple questions about everyone living in your house hold.

The census counts every person living in the United States as well as the five US territories.

According to Pete Rust, Mayor of Green River, the census determines many important things such as state and federal funding, as well as congressional representation. It helps to fund school lunches, road plans, hunter safety courses and families in need.

It also helps lawmakers, business owners and many others to make decisions regarding new schools, clinics, roads and if more services are needed in a particular area. The results will determine how much funding the community will receive. According to Rust, if people do not complete the census, the community could lose millions of dollars in funding.

“I fear that people do not understand the importance of the census” Rust said in an interview.

The census does not require any fees and does not include extra taxes. Its purpose is to determine how many people are living in the area and to determine the funding amounts for various diverse programs. If the community doesn’t receive the funding, another community will.

This will only put the community back further as some of the programs that are funded by these numbers, are crucial to families and low income households in the area.

“We really hope that anybody who knows anybody who hasn’t filled out their census, to encourage them to do so.” Rust said.

All census efforts will end Sept. 30.
